Super Hemisphere Dome

Super hemisphere dome is a spherical cap whose height exceeds that of a hemisphere. Under certain conditions (object point at the center of the sphere), the system can completely eliminate spherical aberration. It can achieve a limiting field of view greater than 180°. Light can enter from the side or even slightly rearward at angles and still be received by the internal sensors. ECOPTIK can manufacture hyperspherical domes exceeding 55% of their radius.

Design Challenges and Key Technologies
  • Aberration Control
    Aberration Control

Although it has no spherical aberration at the center, practical optical systems (such as internal lens groups) need to compensate for the field curvature and astigmatism it introduces. Co-optimizing the hyperspherical dome as the first element of the entire optical system is crucial.

  • Material and Refractive Index Selection
    Material and Refractive Index Selection

The refractive index "n" is a critical parameter. Careful selection of materials with suitable refractive indices is necessary to place the image-side luminous point in a reasonable position and control the ray direction. For infrared applications, commonly used materials include sapphire and ZnS.

  • Extreme Manufacturing Difficulty
    Extreme Manufacturing Difficulty

Machining a complete spherical dome exceeding the height of a hemisphere while maintaining extremely high surface accuracy and finish places extremely high demands on the manufacturing process.

Typical Application Areas
  • Missile Seekers
    Missile Seekers
This is the most typical application. Used to achieve "over-the-shoulder launch" or omnidirectional attack capabilities, enabling the seeker to see targets to the side, rear, or even behind. It is usually used in conjunction with an infrared imaging system.
  • Underwater Optical Systems
    Underwater Optical Systems
Provides AUVs/ROVs with a wide-angle field of view exceeding 180°, virtually eliminating blind spots.
  • All-Sky Imaging Systems
    All-Sky Imaging Systems
Special lenses used to capture 360°×360° panoramic images; a hyperspherical dome can serve as its front element.
